Science Sets Sail: EAM crew sets sail from Tallinn to Rostock

As the last of three legs of ‘Science Sets Sail’ the EAM Crew is going on board of ‘Thor Heyderdal’ in Tallinn, Estonia. Together with a crew of the Department of Chemistry and Pharmacy and a crew of the Faculty of medicine/Collaborative Research Center 1181 the EAM crew is taking part in a 9-day cruise from Tallinn to Rostock via Danzig from 2 –11 August 2017. The EAM team consists of four EAM researchers and six scientists from foreign institutions (Leipzig University, Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Aarhus University, TU Delft, CRPP Bordeaux and DTU Lyngby). The interdisciplinary team is led by EAM researchers Dr. Doris Segets and Dr. Jakob Albert who plan to discuss and develop their project idea: Engineering of tailor-made catalysts based on polyoxometalates (POMs) and nanoparticles (NPs) for enhanced catalytic performance.

Sailing maneuvers, scrubbing the deck, cooking for the whole crew, everyone must help. Discovering the unknown, meeting challenges, learning new things. “We want to demonstrate that the university is not just climbing the international research rankings and marking exams,” says FAU President Joachim Hornegger. “We want to bring science to life in different and innovative ways.”
That’s why FAU is sending a sailing ship across the Baltic Sea under the slogan ‘Science Sets Sail’ for the first time: from Kiel, via Malmo, Riga, Helsinki, Tallinn and Danzig and on to Rostock. On board during each of the three separate legs of the voyage will be 15 FAU scientists and 15 guests from neighboring countries. Together, they want to tackle research questions and form cooperative links and in seven ports they will conceive new ideas and promote their science.
