The development of new materials is a key challenge of our society in a broad range of fields like energy, transport, information technology, and health. To join forces in this context, the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg and the Helmholtz Centers DESY and Geesthacht established a new strategic cooperation named “Kompetenzanker DESY-FAU-HZG''. In December 2016 all partners signed a Letter of Intent about the Kompetenzanker and a preparation phase, funded by in-house resources of the FAU via the Cluster of Excellence ”Engineering of Advanced Materials (EAM)'' and the Helmholtz Centers.
The scope of the Anchor Symposium is threefold. First, the scientific status of the joint specific target research projects (STREPs) of the preparation phase will be presented roughly one year after initial funding. Second, invited speakers will talk about associated research projects and how the `Kompetenzanker' will be embedded into the existing structures of the cooperating institutions. Third, future scientific perspectives and the integration into the national Excellence Strategy and the Program-Oriented Funding of the Helmholtz Association will be discussed.
