Picture of the month: Self-organized fractal structure of a nano-powder subjected to repeated fragmentation and agglomeration

The evolution of a nanopowder due to repeated fragmentation and reagglomeration can lead to fractal structures of robust statistical properties. By means of a novel efficient algorithm, we study a model agglomerate and obtain an asymptotic loosely packed structure of fractal dimension 2.1± 0.1, independent of the details of the process.

From scaling arguments, we develop an algebraic relation between the fractal dimension and the exponent characterizing the fragment size distribution whose physical interpretation is still obscure. The system investigated is an example of self-organized structuring on the nanoscale, a key focus area of research at EAM.
